For older populations...
The power in Power lifting is its capacity to develop great core strength, great posture and flexibility, the keys to remaining independent for a very long time.
I am a student of Power lifting, I have been studying for 1 year. I am also an exercise physiologist (a personal trainer) who specialises in older populations, most of my clientele are over 50 years of age, and several of my clients are in their 80’s.
What I have noticed with those of my clients who maintain their independence into their 80’s is their great core (abdominal and lower back) strength, posture and flexibility.
In seeking out a sport that could incorporate core, back strength, posture and flexibility that could be utilised by anyone, but in particular older populations, I looked across all fields of exercise. I was looking for a sport whose foundations were structured to take care of all these things. And whilst most sports incorporate these elements I found Power lifting got to the point straight up, it is sport whose forms you can take up in your lounge room and progress as much as you desire.
Whilst you may imagine it is a sport for the young and already strong, it is not! It does however have the capacity to make you stronger, feel more youthful and provide you with capacity you may thought you had lost in your everyday.
Find a good teacher, there are many I would whole heartily recommend at Elite Physique, and ask to learn Power lifting, so this is a call for all those men and women who want to feel like dancing, a Tango or two, into the night again...
